The Pier Review

Good morning valued customer,

We have a lot of great information in this edition. What could coronavirus mean for your business and your investments? Why should you stop shortening “2020” to just “20” on important documents? What’s the new product offering from US Futaba?

We know you’ve heard of Coronavirus, but here’s the latest and how it can affect your business.

What is Coronavirus?
Since December 2019, thousands have been infected by the outbreak of Chinese Coronavirus, a cousin of the SARS virus, beginning in Wuhan, China.

Coronavirus is zoonotic which means it can be transmitted from animals to humans and manifests in people with symptoms including a runny nose, cough, sore throat, possibly a headache and fever, and often turns into pneumonia which doesn’t respond to antibiotics.

There are nearly 21,000 cases now, according to the most recent count, 20,500 of which are in China and the rest are dispersed throughout Asia, Europe, and the US.

So, what does this mean for business?
As the number of cases continues to increase rapidly, many investors are running for the exits and the market has been shaky in recent days. The CDC confirming more and more cases across several states in the US has investors taking a “sell first, ask questions later” approach.

Which stocks are hurting?
Tourism and consumer-related sectors have already taken a hit, seeing falling shares. This is pretty typical that in a pandemic, stocks that offer discretionary services to the affected region typically get hurt first.

What can investors do?
The short answer is: nothing. While there may be short-term blips in the market, it’s best to stay calm and wait till the stock prices become cheap to buy a little more if you so choose.

Don’t Abbreviate 2020

A little shorthand can lead to a big problem.

If you’ve been abbreviating 2020 on important documents (for example writing 1/1/20), you could be putting yourself at risk for scammers to manipulate your documents. “20” is easy to turn into “2000” or “2021.” Writing out the whole date could protect you and prevent legal issues on paperwork so be mindful of this shorthand and make it your resolution to no longer use it.
